Roof Damage Is Common After Bad Weather
Living in Tarrant County, we often receive various types of weather which includes high winds, tornados and hail. High winds can blow off shingles on your roof and hail can do real roof damage.
How Do You Know You Have Roof Damage?
Look around your house for any water spots in your ceiling after a bad rain or hail storm. If you see any, you probably have roof damage. Walk outside around your house and look for any visible damage or missing shingles.
Next, call a reputable roofing company to inspect your roof and to locate the cause of any water spots or leaks in your roof. He will then need to give you an estimate to fix the damage and then take the necessary steps to stop any further water damage. Be sure that the roofing contractor gives the estimate with a list of items that includes all charges, including materials, tear off and clean-up. You will need a detailed estimate so you can make a claim on your home insurance. Some roofing companies such as Northwest Roofing of Haslet will work with your insurance company. Remember, your deductible will be your responsibility and not the roofing contractor.
Understanding Your Home Insurance Deductible
Usually there are two different deductibles on your homeowners insurance policy.
- Covers for wind and hail damage.
- Covers “other perils” which is anything that is not weather related.
After you pay your deductible, your insurance company is responsible for the rest of the payment to your roofing contractor. Any high claims that are made on your homeowners insurance, by law, your insurance company must contact your mortgage company. Be sure to get the check endorsed by your mortgage company so that you can pay your roofing contractor immediately.
If you find that you need a re-roof, now is the time to upgrade your shingles to a Class IV. These improved roofing shingles are impact-resistant and will outlast other roofing shingles. *Your insurance company will even give you a discount for upgrading to a better quality Class IV roofing shingles. Class IV roofing shingles will significantly reduce damage to your roof in the future.
*Homeowners should check with their insurance company to see if they qualify. According to Texas Department of Insurance, to qualify for the credit, roof coverings must be tested by an approved laboratory. Roof coverings that have passed the UL Standard 2218 test are classified as either Class 1, 2, 3, or 4. A Class 4 roof covering receives the highest premium credit.
